A five-day technical mission by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) to St. Kitts and Nevis concluded on Friday, September 25, 2026, supporting ongoing efforts to strengthen protected agriculture and build greater climate resilience across the agricultural sector.
The mission was conducted under TCP/STK/4001 – “Strengthening Protected Agriculture to Improve People’s Livelihoods, Food and Nutrition Security”, with a focus on building the capacity of farmers and technical personnel while improving productivity under protected cultivation systems.
The FAO delegation included Mr Melvin Medina Navarro, Land, Water and Agricultural Systems Officer, FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, Ms Anne Desrochers, Plant Production and Protection Specialist, and Mr Jervis Rowe, International Consultant.
The week included technical training in Nutrient Management and Integrated Crop Management under Protected Cultivation Systems, bringing together farmers, project beneficiaries, and technical staff from both islands.
The mission also included a courtesy meeting with the Permanent Secretary, the Director of Agriculture, the project focal point and the national consultant, followed by field-based technical support to optimise beneficiary farms in collaboration with the contractor and Ministry technical team.
Through continued technical cooperation and knowledge exchange, the Department of Agriculture and FAO are working together to strengthen farmers’ capacity, improve productivity, and advance a more climate-resilient agricultural sector in St. Kitts and Nevis.
