Federal Government to assist Nevis in aftermath of treasury fire

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JANUARY 21ST 2014 (CUOPM) – The Federal Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has pledged to work closely with the Nevis Island Administration in Charlestown, to restore normalcy following the fire that gutted the treasury and VAT Office in Charlestown.

In his first public statement since the fire, Prime Minister the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas expressed his regret that the people of Nevis had to endure the shock of their treasury building being destroyed by fire last week.

“Premier Amory has sought the assistance of the Federal Government in this regard, and as you know, it was just this month that, on this programme, I expressed my willingness to work more closely with him, and on another station the following day, he not only welcomed this possibility but affirmed that this is something that he has long been asking for,” said Dr. Douglas during his weekly radio programme “Ask the Prime Minister” on Tuesday.

He said that with the investigation into the cause of the fire well underway, “Premier Amory and the people of Nevis can rest assured that the Federal Government will do all in its power to expedite a return to normalcy where the functioning of the Nevis Treasury is concerned. And I know that the people of Nevis will continue to be the calm and focused people that they always have been.”
