WICB Media Release

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (WICB) — Statistician Charwayne Walker resumes his cricket look after a short break to highlight Guyana’s first Carifta Games gold medalist.

Today he looks at the four bowlers with nine wickets in an innings in Regional cricket.

Four bowlers took 9 wickets in an innings at the Regional first class level. Ryan Hinds with 9 for 68 is the best.

Since the inauguration of Regional first Class Cricket in 1865 only four bowlers have taken nine wickets in an innings; Derrick Parry, Bernard Julien, Rajendra Dhanraj and Ryan Hinds. The first to achieve the feat was the Nevisian and Leeward Islands off spinning all rounder Derrick Parry. Parry mesmerised Jamaica at Sabina Park in 1980 with match figures of 15 for 101. He took 6 for 25 in the Jamaicans’ first innings and 9 for 76 in their second innings. As a result of Parry’s dominance the combined Islands won the Shell Shield clash by 6 wickets.

Jamaica’s first innings 159 All out, Hubert Chang 50, Richard Austin 20; bowling for combined Islands Derrick Parry 6 for 25 and Andy Roberts’ 2 for 31. Combined Islands’ first Innings 239 All out, Jim Allen 62, Irvin Shillingford 54, Victor Eddy 46. Bowling for Jamaica, Clement Thompson took 6 for 74, Ray Wynter 2 for 64, Junior Gordon 2 for 56. Jamaica’s Second Innings 246 All Out, Hubert Chang 42, Basil Williams 38, Everton Mattis 30, Richard Austin 27, Lawrence Rowe 25. Bowling for combined Islands Deryck Parry took 9 for 76, Vivian Richards 1 for 35.

Combined Islands’ second Innings 167 for 4, Enoch Lewis 51, Jim Allen 42, Irvin Shillingford 38 Not out. Richard Austin took 2 for 49.

Trinidadian Bernard Julien took 9 for 97 vs Jamaica in 1982 at the Queens Park Oval. Result was a draw.

Jamaica’s first Innings 346 All out Colin Fletcher 122, Lawrence Rowe 73, Everton Mattis 51. Bowling for Trinidad and Tobago Bernard Julien took 9 for 97. Trinidad & Tobago’s first Innings 480 for 9 declared, Augustine Logie 171, Kirk D’Hecurieux 61, Larry Gomes 59, Aneil Rajah 52, Ranjie Nanan 40, Roland Sampath 40. Bowling for Jamaica Courtney Walsh took 4 for 119 from 35 overs, Richard Austin 2 for 79, Ray Wynter 2 for 98.

Jamaica’s Second Innings, 77 for 1, Everton Mattis 50 not out. Colin Fletcher 24 not out, Bernard Julien took 1 for 12 bowling for Trinidad giving him match figures of ten for 109.

Trinidadian leg spinner Rajendra Dhanraj took 9 for 97 vs Leeward Islands 1996 at Grove Park Nevis in the Second Innings he took 7 for 70, giving him match figures of 16 for 167. Strange enough Dhanraj’s feat eclipsed the record held by Nevisian Deryck Parry 15 for 101. Barbadian Ryan Hinds took 9 for 68 vs Leeward Islands at Grove Park Nevis 2001 in the Leewards Second Innings. He finished with 6 for 34, giving him match figures of 15 for 102 and again this venue where Derrick Parry grew up is where another of his records was broken. Parry’s 9 for 76 against Jamaica at Sabina Park in 1980 was eclipsed by Hinds’ 9 for 68 which is the best Innings figures at the Regional first class level.
