Gender Affairs Coordinator announces activities planned for International Women’s Day 2019

NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (February 20, 2019) — Nevis will join other jurisdictions across the world in celebration of International Women’s Day on Friday March, 08, 2019. However, the day will be observed with a number of activities throughout the month.
Ms. Lorraine Archibald, Coordinator of the Gender Affairs Division, in the Premier’s Ministry, noted that under this year’s theme “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change,” the activities planned would concentrate on a number of areas relating to the advancement of women.
“The theme focuses on innovative ways in which we can advance gender equality and the empowerment of women particularly in the areas of social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure,” she said.
The activities will commence with the launch of free self-defence classes targeting women on March 07. The following day, March 08, Junior Minister of Gender Affairs Hon. Hazel Brandy-Williams will deliver a speech to mark International Women’s Day. During that day members of the public are asked to wear the colour purple in solidarity with women of Nevis and throughout the world.
On the evening of March 08, an Awards and Cocktail ceremony will be held. Two days later on March 10, a church service will be held at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Ramsbury from 11 a.m.
For the event slated for March 13, members of the private and public sectors are asked to decorate their work places in the colour purple in observance of International Women’s Day.
March 20 will be a seminar on Non-Traditional Occupations for women, and on March 22 will be the Women’s Empowerment Fair and Exhibition. The event will be held at the D.R. Walywn Plaza in Charlestown from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Ms. Archibald used the opportunity to encourage everyone in particular the men to participate in the activities open to the public.
