Government Road All Stars and Brown Hill Share Honours as Brown Hill Claim First-Innings Points in NCA Two-Day Draw

Government Road All Stars and Brown Hill fought out a draw in sweltering heat over two days at Brown Hill, with the home side finishing on 128 for 4 while chasing 187 when time expired at 6pm. Brown Hill took the first-innings points after their 172 for 9 surpassed All Stars’ first-innings total of 141 in a Nevis Cricket Association (NCA) two-day fixture.

All Stars, led by captain Bodgenarine Sharma, won the toss and elected to bat first but were bowled out for 141 in 41.4 overs on a pitch that played two-paced early on before settling down as the match progressed. Right-hand opener Akil Greenidge played a determined innings to top-score with 73 off 120 balls, striking six fours and a six. His opening partner, Ross Powell, made 17 off 35 balls at the other end. Jamie Cornelius struck a brisk 17 off just 16 deliveries, with a four and a six, while Nichollas Hero added 15 off 20 balls, including two fours, down the order. No other batter passed 20 as Brown Hill’s bowlers took control.

Opening all-rounder Kunal Tilokani, using his off-spin to good effect, led the attack with 4-46 from 14.4 overs, including a maiden. Right-arm medium-fast bowler Balram Latchman was the pick for economy, returning 3-9 from four overs with a maiden, while all-rounder Rondre Daniel landed his leg-breaks in good areas to finish with 2-34 from 11 overs, including two maidens.

In reply, Tilokani opened the batting and played some delightful drives before he was run out for 14 off 18 balls, an innings that included three fours. Wicketkeeper-batter Carlton Pluck made 13 off 22 balls at the other end. Shelton Forbes then anchored the innings, playing a classy knock built on solid technique. Captain Colin Archibald added 14 off 16 balls with two boundaries before he and Rondre Daniel fell in the final hour of the first day. Brown Hill closed the first day with Treon Daniel and Forbes unbeaten at the crease, trailing by just under 30 runs on first innings.

Overnight, unforeseen circumstances ruled the Daniel brothers out of the second day’s play, with Treon unable to resume his innings and Rondre unable to take any further part. With only nine fit players available, and the two substitutes barred from batting or bowling under the Laws, Forbes continued into Sunday morning without Treon, who retired hurt, while batting alongside the tail. He was eventually dismissed for 81 off 115 balls, with eight fours. Jeremiah Addi and right-arm medium-fast bowler Abijah Nemdhari resisted until 11am on Sunday, with Brown Hill eventually closing their innings on 172 for 9 in 52.2 overs, as conditions played much truer than on the opening day.

Right-arm off-spinner Onaje Amory was the main danger with the ball for All Stars, extracting bounce and turn to finish with 4-62 from 20.2 overs and three maidens. Sharma turned to his own off-spin for 2-31 from 13 overs, while slow left-arm bowler Jaden Carmichael claimed 2-51 from 12 overs, with both bowlers sending down three maidens apiece.

All Stars batted again and declared on 217 for 6 from 50 overs at around 4pm, leaving Brown Hill two hours to chase 187 before the match was due to close at 6pm. Captain Sharma led from the front with the bat as well, top-scoring with 50 off 50 balls, including four fours and two sixes. Ross Powell made 46 off 44 balls, with five fours and a six. Opener Greenidge made 39 off 50 balls with eight fours, while Cornelius added 20 off 64 balls.

Archibald was the pick of the Brown Hill bowlers in reply, taking 3-42 from 11 overs with three maidens. Having picked up an injury while bowling in the first innings, he displayed his versatility by delivering left-arm orthodox spin throughout his second-innings spell rather than his usual left-arm pace. Left-arm medium-fast bowler Jeremiah Addai claimed 2-28 from six overs, while Forbes bowled a tight spell of right-arm off-spin to snare 1-7 from six overs, three of them maidens.

Chasing 187 for victory, Tilokani opened again, this time alongside left-hander Amoree Jones. Jones was fluent early on, playing some lovely drives through extra cover before holing out while attempting to clear the straight boundary for 33 off 26 balls, an innings that included six fours. Tilokani was caught for 10 off 18 balls. Pluck, batting at number four, gave the chase real momentum with a counterattacking 47 off 42 balls, including seven fours, while Forbes added 18 off 17 balls.

With the side down to nine fit players and the two hours running out, Brown Hill closed on 128 for 4 when time expired at 6pm. The match was drawn, with Brown Hill awarded the first-innings points for their lead.
