Independence Contests Aim to Inspire Patriotism

Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 30, 2013 (SKNIS): Persons working or doing business at Government Headquarters in Basseterre will be greeted by a display encouraging participation in two competitions organised as part of St. Kitts and Nevis’ 30th anniversary of Independence.

The National Colours Competition as well as the Cake and Cupcake Competition are being promoted as an opportunity for nationals to showcase their creativity through cooking and fashion skills.

“During the week of the 15th to the 21st of September, we are inviting Kittitians and Nevisians who are residing here and abroad to wear their colours and/or design clothing with the colours of the national flag,” said Alicia Collins, Community Development Officer within the Department of Social Services and Community Development. “We are also looking at hairstyles depicting the colours of the national flag, manicures and pedicures as well as makeup.”

Pictures of the colourful display should be posted on the Facebook page of the Saint Kitts & Nevis Independence 2013 committee where they will be judged by a panel. The number of “likes” a picture receives will also count to the selection of the eventual winner.

The Cake and Cupcake Competition is divided into three categories. Chefs and bakers employed by companies in a professional capacity, chefs and bakers who are self employed, and novices who bake on a recreational basis.

“This allows for a wider cross section of persons to use their baking and decorating skills to depict the colours and the national symbols and anything of significance to St. Kitts and Nevis,” Director of Community Development Azilla Clarke explained.

The contest is now open and interested individuals have until Wednesday, September 11 to submit pieces. The pastries will then be displayed at an exhibition on Friday, September 13 at a fair at Independence Square.

Ms. Clarke added that the National Arts Festival, which is a celebration of arts and culture, will be revived this year and the cupcake competition perfectly complements this initiative as it is grouped under culinary arts.

Registration forms for the two contests are available from the security desk at Government Headquarters or the Department of Community Affairs. Additional information can be obtained via telephone 467-1314
