Nevis U19 Secure 5-Wicket Victory in Extras-Heavy Contest

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis — Nevis Under-19s secured a clinical five-wicket victory over St. Kitts Under-19s on Sunday, successfully chasing a target of 250 in just 39.5 overs.
The match, the second of two back-to-back fixtures between the teams in preparation for the upcoming West Indies Under-19 tournament in late June, showed signs of fatigue from both sides. Missed opportunities—including dropped catches and run-outs—along with an unusually high number of extras, affected both innings, particularly the second.
First Innings: St. Kitts Under-19s
After losing the toss and being asked to bat, St. Kitts posted a competitive 249/6 from their 50 overs, anchored by a captain’s innings from Lawshorn Bergan. He scored 77 off 84 balls, including eight fours, and shared a 51-run third-wicket partnership with opener Sachin Saunders.
Saunders contributed a patient 34 off 72 balls before being dismissed lbw by Ryan Marchan.
Jahiem Clarke provided late acceleration, finishing unbeaten on 55 off 58 balls, including five fours and a six. Dervonje Stokes added an unbeaten 20 off 22 balls to strengthen the total.
For Nevis, Aedan Williams impressed with figures of 2 for 27 from five overs, while Ryan Marchan claimed 2 for 52 from his 10 overs. Deshawn James also contributed with the ball, taking 1 for 22 in six overs. St. Kitts benefited from 29 extras and were also given lifelines through three dropped catches.
Second Innings: Nevis Under-19s
In response, Nevis produced a strong batting display, reaching 251/5 in under 40 overs.
The innings was built on a commanding 98-run second-wicket partnership between Deshawn James and captain Amoree Jones, following the early loss of Karese Farrell, who was run out after failing to ground his bat while attempting a third run.
Nevis got off to a flying start, reaching 53 runs by the seventh over, aided by early fielding lapses and extras—a trend that continued throughout the innings.
Deshawn James led the charge with a well-crafted 60 off 70 balls, including nine fours, earning him the Man of the Match award. He was eventually bowled by Kylan Woods, with a delivery that kept low off the inside edge.
Captain Amoree Jones added a brisk 43 off 41 balls, striking three sixes before being caught at long-off off the bowling of Colois Duke.
Aedan Williams then steadied the innings with a composed 40 off 59 balls, while Nicklos Hero guided Nevis to victory with an unbeaten 31 off 36 deliveries.
Key Factor: Extras
St. Kitts conceded a staggering 62 extras during the Nevis innings, including 46 wides and 11 no-balls. Extras ultimately became the highest contributor to Nevis’ total, surpassing even James’ top score of 60.
Kylan Woods was the most effective of the St. Kitts bowlers, finishing with 2 for 42 from seven overs. Colois Duke (1 for 40) and Dervonje Stokes (1 for 49) also took wickets, but the excessive extras proved too costly.
