Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis — The Simmonds 90 Commemorative Committee has officially launched two national competitions as part of activities marking the 90th birthday of the Federation’s first Prime Minister and National Hero, Kennedy Simmonds.
The Poetry and Birthday Card Design competitions are intended to showcase the creativity, talent, and national pride of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, with a special focus on youth participation.
Committee Chairman Val Henry explained that the competitions form part of a wider calendar of events beginning on Easter Monday, April 6, in tribute to Dr. Sir Kennedy Simmonds, widely recognised as the Father of Independence.
Birthday Card Design Competition
Open to primary school students across the Federation, this competition invites young artists to design the official 90th birthday card for Sir Kennedy. Entries should reflect his life, leadership, legacy, and milestone achievements.
The winning student will receive an attractive prize package, and the selected design will be featured at the official Birthday Gala on April 11, 2026.
Submission deadline: March 31, 2026.
Poetry Competition
The poetry competition will be guided by the theme: “Sir Kennedy at 90: Reflections on a Trailblazer’s Journey.”
Writers and poets are encouraged to reflect on Sir Kennedy’s distinguished service as Premier (1980–1983) and Prime Minister (1983–1995), as well as his enduring national contributions.
Entries will be judged in three age categories:
7–12 years
13–17 years
18 years and older
First- and second-place prizes will be awarded in each category. The overall winner will have the honour of presenting their poem at the Birthday Gala.

The full schedule of activities for the 90th birthday celebrations will be unveiled on March 17, as the Federation prepares for what organisers promise will be a memorable and uplifting tribute to one of the nation’s most influential leaders.
