National Health Plan to be Implemented in One Year Says Health Minister Eugene Hamilton

Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 23, 2015 (SKNIS): A National Health Insurance Plan will be implemented in one year. That assurance came from Minister of Health, the Honourable Eugene Hamilton, while he gave the feature address at the opening ceremony of the 29th Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Policy Board Meeting on October 21 at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort.

The St. Kitts and Nevis Health Minister is of the view that it is important for every Member State in the OECS to have a national health insurance plan. Minister Hamilton explained that if national and regional health system goals are to be achieved this must be through “adequate, predictable and sustainable financing.”

Minister Hamilton noted that National Health Insurance is one of his ministerial portfolios. He explained that it is his objective to ensure that every citizen has access to medical care.

He gave the assurance that, “no longer will that young lady who finds herself with breast cancer or that young man with prostate cancer have to walk the streets with a paper collecting donations of $5 from family and friends and people who shun him to be able to access adequate health care.”

Minister Hamilton indicated that it is his government’s goal to remove the cost burden of every citizen despite his or her financial position.
