Nevis Academy Hosts Spelling Bee

Charlestown—Nevis—It was a very intriguing battle of wit and memory, as the students from grades 3 to 6 at the Nevis Academy were tested in their ability to spell words correctly.

The annual spelling Bee contest, took place at the school on Friday, May 1, 2015.

Prior to the actual competition, Principal of the school, Mrs.Lucia Wilkinson, delivered brief remarks.
This was followed by brief remarks by Ms.Patricia Claxton who ably represented the sponsors of the event, Reliable Motors and Claxton’s Services.

Mrs.Teres Dore also delivered remarks and teacher at the school, Ms.Charliecia Browne introduced the following officials:

Announcers: Ms.Delcita Ward, Ms.Shona Hendrickson, Ms.Earlene Maynard and Ms.Terenz Wallace.

Judges: Ms.Tamesha Saddler and Mrs. Julie Pemberton.

Scorers: Ms.Aleta Liburd and Ms Clare Carey.

Time keeper: Ms.Vera Herbert

She also outlined the rules that guided the competition.

The students of grade 3 and 4 then competed in segment one of the competition.

This was followed by a bit of entertainment in the form of riddles, conducted by Ms.Nidia Perkins and Ms. Ozini Collins.

Segment two which involved the grades 5 and 6 students was equally enthralling and a few tie breakers were required during the competition.

At the end of the contest, the judges ruled as follows:
Grades 3 and 4:
1st place—Jonathan Essien
2nd place—Luare Rodriguez
3rd place—Nyarah Powell
Grades 5 and 6
1st place—Visbal Persaud
2nd place—Josselyne- Essien
3rd place-Rebecca Chowtipersad

The top placers were duly presented with their trophies by Ms.Patricia Claxton and the vote of thanks was delivered by Ms.Monica Fraser.
