(CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS)- Officials at the Departments of Agriculture, Fisheries and Co-operatives have been successful in staging the opening ceremony of the 19th edition of Nevis’ premier agricultural event – the Annual Agriculture Open Day.

The annual Open Day started today Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Villa Grounds in Charlestown and will continue tomorrow Friday, March 22, 2013.

This year’s event is being held under the theme, ‘Intensify Local Production for a Healthier Nation’. According to officials at the Agriculture Department, the theme was chosen to highlight the importance of making people understand the significance of eating properly as the island is going through a non-communicable disease crisis. This they say is as a result of poor eating habits and low consumption of fruits and vegetables. The Agriculture department continues to endeavor to promote and strengthen good eating habits on the island.

Zion Villager and veteran Livestock Farmer, Mrs. Sandra David was honored as the Patron at today’s ceremony.

The annual Agriculture Open Day continues to create a greater awareness of the importance of Agriculture to the nation’s economy and to increase the level of interest in Agriculture. It also highlights the advancing efforts in increased food production and productivity.

Permanent Secretary of Agriculture, Mr. Eric Evelyn during his opening remarks assured the general public that this year’s event will live up to the exceptional standard established over the past eighteen years. He extended a special invitation to the public to attend and support the event for both days.

Presentation of awards was made by Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Alexis Jeffers.

Food preparation demonstrations and lively entertainment will also feature over the two day event.
