Nevis highlights the Nevis Peak National Park and Camps River Interpretation Centre as a national initiative supporting biodiversity awareness and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

COP17 — Nevis is advancing biodiversity education and public awareness through the recently unveiled Nevis Peak National Park and Camps River Interpretation Centre in Gingerland, an initiative showcased at the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Raoul Pemberton, Director of the Department of Physical Planning and Environment in Nevis, highlighted the initiative while sharing the country’s biodiversity conservation priorities during a side event examining Caribbean progress towards implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).

The Interpretation Centre serves as an educational resource, providing information on the island’s plants, animals and biodiversity conservation. With a particular emphasis on engaging young people, the facility seeks to strengthen understanding of Nevis’s natural heritage and encourage greater appreciation for the importance of protecting the environment.

The initiative contributes to Target 21 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which emphasizes ensuring that biodiversity information and knowledge are accessible to guide conservation efforts, decision-making and public participation.

Nevis’s participation at COP17 underscores the importance of national initiatives in advancing regional biodiversity objectives. By making environmental information more accessible and fostering awareness among younger generations, the Interpretation Centre represents a practical approach to building public understanding of biodiversity and supporting long-term conservation efforts.

The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) is participating in COP17 with support from the European Union (EU) through the COLOURS Programme. This partnership reflects the EU’s continued commitment to strengthening biodiversity conservation and promoting regional environmental cooperation across the Eastern Caribbean.

Through initiatives such as the Nevis Peak National Park and Camps River Interpretation Centre, Nevis is contributing to broader regional efforts to protect biodiversity, promote environmental education and advance implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
