Orientation Manual Empowers Nurses in St. Kitts and Nevis

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 24, 2016 (SKNIS): Nurses in St. Kitts and Nevis have a reference guide pertaining to matters including the structure of the Ministry of Health, job descriptions and the types of leave, thanks to a manual that was handed over to Minister of State, responsible for Health Honourable Wendy Phipps.

The reference book entitled “Ministry of Health, St. Kitts – Nevis, Community Based Health Services Orientation Manual,” was handed over at the Annual Nurses Reporting Meeting on March 22, when Coordinator of Community Based Nursing Services, Eulynis Browne, highlighted some of the information.

“It has a synopsis of community nursing and it gives the history of community nursing in St. Kitts and Nevis,” Nurse Browne said. It also informs the new worker of the structure of the Ministry of Health because some people really don’t know how the Ministry of Health actually operates. So it is important that we understand the structure and the order. Also, it has the roles and responsibilities of each person.”

In addition to outlining the role of each position, the manual states the rules specific to nursing officers such as procedures for sick leave, absences and documentation.

Nurse Browne said that the document provides a synopsis of other areas that network with community based services such as social services, the Health Promotion Unit, and the schools’ health district.

The manual was presented to the minister on behalf of community-based nursing.
