Persons whose packages were stolen at Post Office still waiting for compensation

Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 13, 2018 – It is nearly a year since the General Post Office (US mailbox section) was burglarized and customers are still waiting for compensation.

The post office was broken into during the evening of June 18 or the early morning of June 19 and was closed for a period of time for police to carry out an investigation and the postal authorities to assess the damage.

“Upon reopening of its doors, customers whose valuable and expensive items were stolen were told to leave their invoices along with their contact numbers, however nothing was done by the authorities,” said an individual, who spoke on condition that her name is not used.

“No calls, no reassurance, no reimbursement. Customers have been continuously asking about their refunds/payments for their stuff. No positive feedback has been given by the relevant authorities. No information has been made available. It’s pure run around from the heads at the post office,” said the individual on Wednesday.

“From since June 2017 to June 2018 and nothing favourable has happened yet. This is very disappointing. Had it been overseas, persons would have already been compensated. This has left a very bitter taste in the mouth,” the person said.

She added: “Persons who lost their stuff didn’t just pick up their monies off the road, they worked hard for it. If we can’t trust those in authority to do right, then we are doomed.”
