PLP Chairman opposes the rise of a Timothy Harris dictatorship in St. Kitts and Nevis

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS – Douglas Wattley, Chairman of the co-ruling People’s Labour Party (PLP) of Prime Minister Dr the Hon Timothy Harris says he opposes a Timothy Harris dictatorship in the twin-island Federation.
Wattley has been openly critical of decisions made by Prime Minister Harris and his Team Unity ministers in the PLP, Concerned Citizens (CCM) and Peoples Action Movement (PAM) three-party coalition in office for just 17 months.
“I will not help to raise a dictator in this country. Neither would I tolerate a corrupt. I am certainly not interested in creating a new planter class. Every mistake can be remedied,” Wattley wrote on his FaceBook Page on Wednesday.
It must be recalled that past and present leaders of the 84-year old St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), from the Right Excellent Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw to the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil Llewellyn Douglas, have constantly warned the electorate of the danger of putting political power into the hands of those who possess the economic power.
Wattley, who resigned last week as Chairman of the state-owned ZIZ Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) Board of Directors has been severely critical of Prime Minister Harris and recently described the Team Unity Government of Dr Harris as “wicked” and “evil.”
In his latest salvo, Wattley accused Prime Minister Harris of circling the wagons of persons who are critical of the Team Unity Administration.
“When I started to speak out, I was the lone voice on the opposition stage. The PAM was barely breathing. The PAM could not even win at hop scotch. And Dr. Harris was still with the Labour Party. I sacrificed so that some of you can get what you want. But you are both greedy and bad minded. I sacrificed so that you can talk smack about people like me. What did you sacrifice? We succeeded in putting Team Unity in power so that you can fill your baskets – and to hell with poor people. But remember – you sacrificed nothing,” Wattley wrote.
In a recent interview with WINNFM, Wattley was asked whether he is still Chairman of the People’s Labour Party that was started by Dr. Timothy Harris and Sam Condor. He said yes he was, at least on paper.
Wattley also disclosed that the PLP is relatively inactive in part because it has proven difficult to convene meetings.
Douglas Wattley cited two issues he says need to be addressed: whether he is going to continue as PLP chairman and whether Prime Minister Harris is still the leader and representative of the PLP.
Scores of persons, known to be Team Unity supporters have publicly criticised the Prime Minister and his ministers.
Wattley is the latest person to resign within the Team Unity Administration over issues of transparency, accountability and good governance. Earlier resignations were Mr. Clecton Philip as Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Harris and Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Franklin Brand, who resigned one month short on a full year on the job
