Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 18, 2019 – Police have confirmed an investigation is underway into an armed robbery that took place outside of a supermarket on Wellington Road, Basseterre on Thursday night.
In a statement on Friday police said investigations so far have revealed that at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, four masked men in a vehicle with a paper license plate pulled up to a vehicle owned by the supermarket that was parked outside.
“One of the masked men disembarked the vehicle and demanded money from an employee who was in the supermarket’s vehicle. The man had what appeared to be a firearm. He took a sum of cash from the employee and fled the scene in the vehicle occupied by the other masked men,” police statement said.
“Investigations into the matter are ongoing. Persons with information about this incident are asked to contact the Criminal Investigation Department at the Basseterre Police Station by dialing 465-2241, their nearest Police Station or the crime hotline at 707,” the police said.
The bus belongs to the owners of the Island Foods which operates Chinese supermarkets and stores at several locations around St Kitts. It was parked outside the Island Foods supermarket outlet across from the Basseterre Seventh Day Adventist Church.
The bandits reportedly made off with over EC$10,000 in cash.
Thursday night’s armed robbery is the latest attack on Chinese supermarkets.
Armed and masked men robbed a Chinese restaurant in Old Road, six miles from Basseterre on April 9. Another Chinese restaurant in the building that once housed Radio One on Wellington Road in Basseterre was robbed by three armed and masked men who took money from customers and the cash register on April 7.
