POLICE INVESTIGATING SHOOTING DURING APPREHENSION OF A SUSPECT

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 02, 2015 (RSCNPF): The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force Violent Crime Unit (VCU) is investigating a Police related shooting which occurred about 8.50 p. m. last night, Sunday November 01, in the McKnight area.

According the unit report, the incident occurred while Police were in the process of apprehending Craig “Jumbies” Halliday, of Upper Thibou Avenue for carrying an illegal firearm.

During the arrest in an alley that connects Upper Thibou and Upper Shaw Avenues, in McKnight, two persons who were accompanying Craig Halliday, a juvenile male and Akeem Chumney of Fort Thomas Road, received gunshot wounds.

They were transported to the JNF “General” Hospital by the Emergency Medical Services. The juvenile sustained injuries to both ankles, and Chumney, his left ankle.

Both victims were treated and detained at the Surgical Ward.

Craig “Jumbies” Halliday is currently on bail on a charge of murder and is due to appear at the Nevis assizes onTuesday, November 03.

Halliday has been detained by Police for illegal possession of one (1) Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol with thirteen rounds of ammunition.  This seizure brings to 18 the number of illegal firearms taken from the streets to date this year, six more than 2014.

The scene was processed by the Forensic Department, and the investigation continues.

An investigation by the Office of Professional Standards will be commissioned.
