Primary Schools Football League Underway

The annual Primary Schools’ Football league, got underway on Friday 18th October, at the ET Willet Park.  The event which is yet to attract a sponsor is a collaborative effort between the Department of Education and the Department of Youth and Sports.

A brief but impressive ceremony was held prior to the commencement of the on-field action.  The ceremony was ably chaired by Education Officer, Mr. Shefton Liburd and included prayer by Youth Officer, Miss Lanisa Burke; the national anthem of St. Kitts and Nevis, rendered by IWPS student, Azaelea Elliot and the athletes’ oath, which was done by JLPS student, Rejaun Warner.

Assistant Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Miss D. Michelle Liburd, represented the Minister of Sports, Hon. Eric Evelyn, in his absence and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Kevin Barrett, represented Education Minster, Hon. Troy Liburd, who was also unable to make it to the ceremony, due to other commitments.

Both Barret and Liburd encouraged the players to play fair, be respectful and give of their best efforts.  Barret also told them that they can achieve greatness through the playing of Football, while referencing world-renowned Footballer, Messi, and informed them that he (Messi), was once a student like them.

Chairperson, Mr. Shefton Liburd, gave the officials’ oath and PS Barret officially declared the competition open.

Several matches were played on that day, which attracted a fair gathering at the Park.

CPS 8 VOJN 0
STPS 1 EPPS 0
JLPS 7 MCPS 0
IWPS 7 Nevis Academy 0
