Prime Minister Skerrit Assumes Chairmanship of CARICOM

Roseau, Dominica (Friday, July 1, 2016) – Prime Minister and Minister for Finance for the Commonwealth of Dominica, the Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit, assumed the 6-month Chairmanship of CARICOM today, Friday, July 1st.

The outgoing Chairman was Prime Minister of Belize, the Honourable Dean Oliver Barrow who held the position from January 1st to June 30th.

The next meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government will take place in Guyana from July 4th to 6th and Prime Minister Skerrit will lead a delegation to that meeting.

Prime Minister Skerrit is expected to address several topical regional issues, when he address the 37th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of CARICOM on Monday. PM Skerrit’s address is eagerly anticipated by many across the region and the world, particularly since he is the incoming Chairman of the 20-Member grouping.

This Conference is being held just days after the so-called Brexit upheaval in Great Britian and observers will be listening with interest to hear how PM Skerrit and his counterparts address this and other international issues of interest and relevance to the region.

The Opening Ceremony on Monday, July 4th, is slated to commence at 5:00 p.m. AST at the National Curtural Centre. Citizens and residents of Dominica living at home and in the Diaspora will be able to view live television coverage of the opening ceremony via CaribVision as well as tune in via Internet*.
