Each year, the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force receives numerous reports and complaints of groups of teenagers discharging fireworks while running through or near fuel stations. To state the obvious, this is a practice that poses an immediate and catastrophic risk to life and property.
This repeated behaviour reflects a growing disregard for safety and for the rule of law. Recklessness is not a rite of passage; it is a criminal offence that endangers everyone. Therefore, such behaviours cannot be tolerated or excused. Individuals found engaging in such dangerous activity will be subject to arrest and prosecution.
Parents are strongly urged to take responsibility for the supervision and behaviour of their children, particularly during the holiday season. The Force reminds the public that fireworks are explosive devices, not toys, and that handling or igniting them near any flammable substance can have disastrous results, such as fatal explosions and mass casualties.
We strongly encourage everyone to conduct themselves responsibly to prevent a tragedy before it happens. Safety cannot be seasonal; it must be standard.
