BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS – Today, June 17, people around the world are observing Global Garbage Man Day, a special occasion dedicated to recognising the hardworking men and women whose tireless efforts help keep our communities clean, safe, and healthy.

The observance serves as a reminder to pause and express appreciation to sanitation workers for the essential services they provide every day, often under challenging conditions. Whether through a simple wave, a smile, or a heartfelt “thank you,” residents are encouraged to show their gratitude not only on this day but throughout the year.

This year’s observance is being held under the theme “Food Waste,” drawing attention to one of the most pressing yet preventable environmental challenges facing the world today. Globally, vast amounts of food are wasted each year, contributing to environmental degradation, undermining food security, and slowing progress toward building a sustainable, circular economy.

The theme calls on individuals, families, and communities to be more mindful of their consumption habits and to take practical steps to reduce food waste, recycle where possible, and dispose of waste responsibly.

As we celebrate Global Garbage Man Day, it is also an opportune time to reflect on our own responsibilities as citizens. Keeping our communities clean should not rest solely on the shoulders of sanitation workers. Each of us has a role to play in maintaining clean surroundings, protecting the environment, and fostering a culture of civic pride and responsibility.

To the sanitation workers who faithfully serve our communities week after week, we extend sincere thanks and appreciation. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and your contribution to the well-being of our nation is invaluable.

Happy Global Garbage Man Day!
