School Dismissed Early Due to Smoke from Suspected Bushfire

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, May 12, 2026 — A bush fire has resulted in the closure and early dismissal of students from two high schools and one primary school in Basseterre due to heavy smoke affecting surrounding areas.

Parents and guardians were asked to promptly collect their children from the Beach Allen Primary School, the Basseterre High School (BHS), and the Washington Archibald High School (WAHS).

According to reports, thick black smoke from the fire has spread across sections of Basseterre Valley and is also affecting homes and businesses in the Conaree area.

School officials stated that the precautionary measure was taken to protect the health and safety of students, teachers, and staff as air quality concerns increased throughout the day.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, while emergency personnel work to contain the fire.
