SENIORS TAKE ET WILLETT PARK BY STORM

By:Curtis Morton

It was the stellar event of the entire month of activities, celebrated for older persons’ month 2016.

The seniors donned their sportswear and dominated the ET Willet Park on Thursday 27th October in their second annual Fun and sports action day. This event was coordinated the Social Services department’s seniors’ division, in collaboration with the Mental Health Unit; the Nevis Red Cross and the Youth and Sports Department.

The action on the track was preceded by a brief opening ceremony which was chaired by Mr. Eric Evelyn who kept the sizeable crowd entertained throughout.

The opening prayer was said by Rev. Archibald and the national anthem was wonderfully rendered by Miss Nayalah Daniel

The impressive profile on the patron was nicely presented by Ms. Jamieka Morton and this was followed by the athlete’s pledge, done by Carlos Othello and the officials’ oath, by Shoyah Lawrence.

Mrs. Garcia Hendrickson then presented the very comprehensive but brief vote of thanks and then it was left to the honoured patron of the day, Mr. James GHANDI Phillip, to officially declare the meet open.

This was followed by an exciting dance past, led by Meredith Amory and GHANDI Phillip.

Immediately after that, the exciting on track action commenced.

The athletes of Red house; Maroon house and Orange house gave it their all, much to the pleasure of the supportive crowd.

The races included: 50 meters walk; thread the roll; tape ball throw; flat race; lime and spoon; fill the bottle; dress up race; obstacle race; water and bucket race and tyre race.

Mrs. Olvis Dyer was the favourite athlete of Commentator Eric Evelyn, as she got no fewer than five third places during the course of the afternoon.

At the end of the day however, the champion house was the Orange house with 95 points.

Red house was second with 83 points and Maroon house got a creditable third spot, with 47 points.
