The St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force (SKNDF) Coast Guard is strengthening its support for national maritime safety and coastal resilience following the handover of three SOFAR Spotter marine-monitoring buoys to the Federation.
The equipment, provided through a regional initiative led by the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH), will provide near-real-time information on wave conditions, atmospheric pressure, and sea-surface temperatures. One of the buoys is additionally equipped to measure temperature at varying depths.
With two buoys designated for St. Kitts and one for Nevis, the system will enhance the Federation’s ability to monitor changing sea conditions, strengthen early-warning capabilities, and support maritime safety, emergency response, fisheries, research, and coastal planning.
The SKNDF Coast Guard will work alongside national stakeholders to support the responsible deployment, monitoring, and protection of these important national assets.
