St. Kitts and Nevis congratulates Republic of Suriname on 40th Anniversary of Independence

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 01, 2015 (SKNIS) —In a congratulatory message to His Excellency Desiré Delano “Dési” Bouterse, President of the Republic of Suriname, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, extended best wishes to the Government and people of the Dutch territory on its commemoration of another milestone of 40 years of Independence.

“Suriname continues to demonstrate a commitment to fulfill its role as a significant team player in the regional integration movement and I anticipate your unwavering support as we advance our progressive agenda to engender meaningful development in our beloved countries,” Prime Minister Harris told Mr. Bouterse, 70, on behalf of the Government and people of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

“Our two nations have enjoyed a close relationship based on our shared values of democracy and the desire to pursue sustainable development intended to empower our people to achieve their true potential. With the current economic and social challenges, it is opportune on the occasion of your nation’s achievement of political independence, to further cement our bonds of friendship and cooperation,” Dr. Harris said, adding that “the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis join me in wishing your Government and people a year of success and prosperity as you celebrate your people’s liberation.”

“Please accept my profound wishes for your personal good health and the continued prosperity of the nation of Suriname,” Prime Minister Harris said.

Suriname was a plantation colony of the Netherlands that gained its independence on November 25, 1975.
