Stop and Search at Nevis Ferry Terminal Nets Large Quantity of Marijuana, One Arrested and Charged

Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 12, 2016 (RSCNPF): A personal stop and search at the Charlestown Ferry Terminal has resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of cannabis (marijuana) and the arrest of Kurt Hazel of St. Johnson’s Village St. Kitts.

At approximately 9.00am, today (April 12) Hazel disembarked a ferry at the Charlestown Ferry Terminal and was stopped and searched by officers. A large quantity of cannabis (marijuana) was discovered. Hazel was arrested and has been charged with the offences of possession of cannabis and possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

The stop and search at the ferry terminal is a part of our ongoing crime prevention and crime fighting efforts to reduce crime and the fear of crime in our communities.

Commenting on the seizure, Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Operations, Mr. Terrance James said, “operations such as the stop and search, may at times be a little inconvenient the public, however, they are essential as we continue the efforts of reducing crime and the fear of crime, and ensuring citizen safety on our streets and in our communities.” He added, ” the assistance and patience of the community is greatly appreciated.”

The stop and searches, vehicular check points, searches of abandoned properties and increased mobile patrols are being done as efforts to ensure citizen safety, by removing any found illegal firearms, ammunition, illegal drugs, and other instruments that can be used to commit crimes from our communities.
