There were no drawn out speeches. No pomp and ceremony. Only a DJ blasting some music, as the inaugural tape ball competition, hosted by the Youth and Sports Department, got on the way.
It was Sunday, 7th October and the action was at the ET Willet Park.
A small crowd was on hand for the first game but this swelled to great proportions as the evening progressed.
The first game of the 10 overs a side competition, saw SDA Jets matching skills against the GT United (Guyanese).
Curtis Morton Jr won the toss and the Jets voted to send the opposition in. Curtis Morton Sr and Brian Dowe, opted to stand out of this game.
The GT United was in early trouble, as Zavero Forbes, soon had the aggressive Rakeesh, skying an attempted hook and being easily caught.
From thereon, the GT United team got busy and the crowd was highly entertained as Anan and Alvin appeared to be in a boundary hitting contest.
The fast outfield, the strong easterly breeze and the poor fielding of the Jets players, did not help their cause. Hon. Alexis Jeffers who was fielding at long off, had a particularly rough day in the field.
By the time the ten overs were completed, the GT United team had stacked up an imposing 119 runs.
A score like that from 10 overs should be a winning total.
The Jets came out swinging. Skipper Curtis Morton Jr led from the front and along with Zavero Forbes, literally woke up the crowd to the reality that there was indeed a game on!
The GT United had no answer to the early onslaught, as fours and sixes rained at the ETW.
Morton was more intent on muscling the ball over the ropes, while Forbes excelled with some orthodox straight drives and back foot punches, through the covers.
After just four overs, the score was 64 for no loss.
However, Morton Jr holed out from one big swing too many and even though Forbes batted through to the final over, the momentum was lost.
Oneil Walters at number three, started with a six, then a four but after that the Jets seemed to lose pressure and started to crash.
With 19 runs required from the last over, bowled by Elroy JIMBO David, it would have needed the heroics of a Carlos Brathwaite. The fat lady had scaled the walls and was singing loudly in the Park, as JIMBO, for good measure knocked over the stumps of two batsmen and just missed out on a hat trick.
GT United won by 17 runs.
