The Delisle Walwyn Group of Companies partnered with the Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority to facilitate Litter Walk activities to commemorate ‘International Mother Earth Day’. April 22 was designated as International Mother Earth Day by a consensus resolution adopted by the United Nations in 2009 and it is a day on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection.
The Litter walk activities incorporates the cleanup of specific areas around Nevis by various groups including primary school students, and the erection of signs encouraging persons to dispose of their garbage in the bins provided in an effort to ‘Keep Nevis Clean and Healthy’.
A small ceremony took place on April 22 to launch the activities, and included remarks by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Mrs. Nicole Slack-Liburd, Manager of Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority, Ms Carlyn Lawrence; and a representative of the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society’s Conservation and Bio-Diversity Committee, Ms Isabel Byron.
Also presenting remarks, Business Development Manager, Delisle Walwyn & Co Ltd, Mrs Youlouca Armony-Browne, articulated the Group’s commitment to leading and supporting initiatives that promote environmental responsibility and noted that, “taking responsibility for the preservation, conservation, beautification and cleanliness of our environment will not only redound in health benefits and comfortable surroundings for us, the residents, it will also have a positive impact on our ability to earn foreign exchange derived from Tourism. Visitors would take pleasure in visiting our shores and will want to come back and refer others”.
