The Ministry of Sports Revives Annual Scholastic Sports Awards‏

Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 07, 2016 (SKNIS): After years of dormancy, athletes and nationals can once again look forward to the revival of the Department of Sports Annual Scholastic Sports Award.

While appearing on this week’s (Wednesday 06) edition of the Government’s weekly radio and television programme “Working for You”, Stanley Knight, Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Sports, said that the awards will be revived in a very big way this year.

“We have the rebirth of the Scholastic Sports Awards which will be hosted at Government House on Wednesday, July 13,” said the permanent secretary. “What is going to happen at that event, I think is very significant where the top three persons in each sport that is organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Sport at both primary and high school level is going to be recognized.”

The awardees will be acknowledged from a number of sporting fraternities including basketball, football, netball, tennis, cricket and athletics. PS Knight said that the above mentioned disciplines are not seen by many due to that fact that they are mostly done during school hours. He noted that the Department of Sports continues to work diligently with hundreds of students.

Equally important is the Annual Sports Camp which runs for two weeks commencing on Monday, July 18.

“You will have all of these disciplines where you get an opportunity to work directly with coaches to partner with peers to create old friendships,” he said, adding that a few organizations including the National Federations and the St. Kitts Royal Gulf Club have partnered with the Ministry of Sports for this year’s camp.

The St. Kitts Royal Gulf Club and the Department of Sport Summer Camp will run concurrently. The golf club will be offering a golf camp for four hours where athletes would learn more about the sport.

“On the completion of the camp, the St. Kitts Golf Club again in partnership with the Department of Sports is extending [access to the campers] so that for the next four weeks those individuals can continue to go to the Marriott Gulf Club and play for free,” said Mr. Knight.

The Department of Sports Camp is organized in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, the National Federations, and the National Olympic Committees, and through all of the entities that have been individual sponsors. The Marriott Gulf Club Camp is co-sponsored by Scotia Bank and the Ram’s Group of Companies.
