CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS — The Climate and Disaster Communications Ambassadors, in collaboration with the Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD), will conduct Hurricane Awareness Drive 2026 from Sunday, August 16, to Saturday, August 22, under the theme “Preparedness Starts With YOU!”
The campaign will deliver practical hurricane-preparedness information directly to churches, Memorial Square, businesses, a community symposium, broadcast programmes, social media channels, and communities across Nevis. It is supported by Mercy Corps, our main sponsor, and participating public, community, faith, and media partners.
Activities begin with presentations in churches during Sunday worship on August 16. Monday’s public programme at Memorial Square will feature emergency-kit guidance, public interviews, and qualified first-aid and CPR demonstrations, subject to final partner confirmation. Tuesday will take preparedness information directly to businesses throughout Nevis.
On Wednesday, the Hickman’s Community Resilience Symposium will feature an ambassador-led hurricane-awareness presentation, a Community Emergency Response Team presentation, and Mercy Corps’ overall plan for the Hickman’s project. Thursday will focus on youth, digital outreach, the Hurricane Video Challenge, and live television and radio engagement.
Friday’s island-wide caravan will carry approved messages through communities and conclude at Memorial Square with the campaign’s public closing. Saturday’s outreach to Seventh-day Adventist churches will conclude the week’s faith-based activities.
Preparedness must begin before a hurricane threatens. This drive allows every household, business, and community organisation to take at least one practical action now.
Residents are encouraged to prepare emergency kits, update family plans, protect important documents, know their nearest shelter, follow official information, and plan support for people who may require additional assistance.
