The streets of Charlestown are usually congested but, today, Wednesday, November 30, 2016, created a nightmare for vehicles and pedestrians in the island of Nevis trying to make their journey on their daily routes. This caused the vehicles and pedestrians to manoeuver in their journeys in the capital.
The cause of the congestion is a blockage of a significant portion of Main Street, Charlestown to accommodate the lighting of the Christmas tree, later this evening.
A huge stage has been setup on Main Street in front of the Square. Additionally, vendors who will operate are also setting booths.
This has caused the full closure of the usual Gingerland Bus Stop. The Buses from Gingerland are allowed to go through the No Entry sign by Daniel’s Deck, and park by the Court House. Passengers can embark and disembark in that general vicinity.
One bus driver who contacted this media house expressed his outrage by the action taken by the Police to block the road and close the bus stop. The bus driver expressed that the bus drivers pay their business licenses and were not even afforded the courtesy by the police to tell them of the action taken.
When contacted, the Police could not even explain what was going on. It appears that they were blindsided by the organizers of the Christmas committee which placed the oversized stage in the middle of the road.
Both pedestrians and vehicle operators are expressing their outrage. One described it as “Only in Nevis boy. Not a soul say a thing. No respect from authority for anybody”.
The Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place this evening at the heart of Charlestown at 7:30 p.m.
