Trinidad foreign minister makes call for new diplomacy of developmen

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Winston Dookeran, minister of foreign affairs of Trinidad and Tobago, has called on Commonwealth foreign affairs ministers to embrace a new diplomacy of development on the premise that the world economy is now engaged in several new starts at the same time. He was speaking to the foreign affairs ministers attending the pre-CHOGM foreign ministers meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The focus of the meeting was on inclusive and sustainable development, based on a concept paper prepared by the government of Sri Lanka, entitled “Growth with Equity: Inclusive Development”, for the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

Dookeran said, “Small economies are neither isolated nor insulated from world security and economic ripples, and must accept the new interpretation of the reality where forces of convergence are now shaping new development architecture, thus requiring a new diplomacy of development.”

Dookeran expressed strong support for the focus of the meeting on inclusive development and urged the meeting to take the necessary political steps that would inform the new diplomacy of development.
