U-19s fall to Bangladesh

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC:West Indies Under 19s crashed to an ignominious 198 run defeat against Bangladesh Under 19s in the third Youth one-day international (ODI) match on Friday.

The West Indies were bowled out for a humiliating 88 in just 18 of their allotted 50 overs in response to Bangladesh’s 286 for six in 50 overs in a day-and-night match that hardly went into the night at the Guyana national stadium.

The visitors have now taken a 2-1 lead in the seven-match series after West Indies won the opening match and lost the second.

The West Indian batsmen were no match for the Bangladesh spin attack plus poor shot selection saw them equalling their lowest score in Under 19 cricket.

In 2004, they made 88 against Pakistan.

The Bangladesh target at no point in the chase seemed achievable as poor batting highlighted the homeside’s disappointing innings.

Three top-order batsmen got into double figures, a succession of ducks and a tail-end collapse against the spin of Jubair Hossain ensured Bangladesh remained in firm control of the lopsided encounter.

Shimron Hetmyer scored 17, Leroy Lug 16, and Fabian Allen 15 before three wickets fell as Hossain snapped up a hat-trick with the score on 87.

Jofra Archie was trapped lbw, Jermaine Jones caught at backward point and Brian Charles lbw as well as Hosain finished with three for seven from two overs while Rahatul Ferdous grabbed three for nine.
