The Nevis Electricity Company Limited (NEVLEC) reintroduced the Fuel Surcharge on electricity bills effective June 2026. This charge reflects changes in the cost of fuel used to generate electricity and is adjusted periodically in response to fluctuations in fuel prices.
What is the Fuel Surcharge? The Fuel Surcharge is a variable charge applied to electricity consumption, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). It helps NEVLEC recover the cost of fuel required to generate electricity and supply power to your homes and businesses.
Why does the Fuel Surcharge change? Fuel is a major component of the cost of electricity generation. The price NEVLEC pays for fuel is influenced by factors such as international oil market conditions, global supply and demand, transportation costs, and other external market forces.
While NEVLEC continually works to provide a reliable electricity service and manage operating costs responsibly, the Company does not control international fuel prices. Consequently, when the cost of fuel increases or decreases, the Fuel Surcharge will be affected.
What does this mean for your bill? The Fuel Surcharge is calculated based on the number of units consumed during the billing period. As a result, the amount charged will depend on both the applicable Fuel Surcharge rate and your electricity consumption.
For example, at a rate of EC$0.96 per kWh, a customer who consumes 200 units would incur a Fuel Surcharge of EC$192.00. The Fuel Surcharge is separate from other applicable charges on the electricity bill.
What can customers do to reduce their bills? Customers are encouraged to monitor their electricity usage and adopt energy-saving practices, such as switching off lights and appliances when not in use, using air-conditioning efficiently, and choosing energy-efficient appliances where possible.
NEVLEC understands that changes in electricity costs can place additional pressure on households and businesses. We remain committed to transparency, responsible cost management, and the continued delivery of reliable electricity to the people of Nevis.
We thank you, our valued customers, for your understanding and continued support as we navigate changes in fuel costs.
