*Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 30, 2015 (SKNIS):* The promise of economic relief for the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis by the government of national unity is coming to fruition as Value Added Tax (VAT) will be taken off of all food, medicine and funeral expenses effective April 07, 2015.
“Not only will this ease the tax burden on families in our federation, it will stimulate economic activity which will create employment opportunities for many,” noted Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris. “Team Unity promised a better way, we promised prosperity for all and this initiative represents a fresh start on that new journey. Our priority will always be
to ensure prosperity for all.”
The recent announcement of the removal of VAT has received positive regional attention as the Civil Service Association in St. Lucia has urged its government to “follow the lead” of the government of national unity.
A number of local individuals also weighed in on the removal of VAT.
“The VAT really digs into our pockets,” said one consumer. “Now you can balance yourself out because you’ll be surprised at the end of the month how much money you save.”
“It will make you want to get more stuff,” said another. “There are a lot of people who say they are not going to shop until after April 7.”
Another individual shared that “it is an ease for poor people. Even if you save 10 cents or 50 cents it’s better for all.”
“It’s an excellent idea because I’m going to save money,” said one gentleman. “I could afford to buy more or I can keep buying the same amount and still save money.”
