CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS — Longstanding sportsman, coach, mentor, administrator, and community advocate Mr. Wendel A. “Micey” Wallace was among the individuals recognised at the recent Unsung Heroes Awards Ceremony, where he was honoured as the Unsung Hero for St. James’ Parish.
Mr Wallace’s remarkable journey in sports began with football, representing his village team before earning a place on the Nevis National Football Team in the early 1990s. His passion for sport soon extended to cricket, where he represented the Highlights International Cricket Team. During his tenure with the organisation, he also served as an executive member and was part of its management team for several years.
For more than a decade, Mr Wallace has proudly represented the Masters Cricket Team, while dedicating more than 15 years to the development of young cricketers through the Cricket Grassroots Programme. He currently works with more than 50 boys and girls, helping to develop their skills and foster a love for the sport.
His commitment to youth development also extends to his alma mater, the Violet O. Jeffers-Nicholls Primary School, where he has consistently given back to the institution and assisted with almost every sporting activity hosted by the school.
Mr Wallace’s contribution to sports development is not limited to cricket. He served as coach of the Nevis Under-13 and Under-15 Football Teams for more than six years, helping to guide and inspire young footballers. He currently serves as coach of the New Vision Togetherness Cricket Team.
Among his most notable achievements is the establishment of the Wendel A. Wallace Cricket Academy, which officially opened its doors on August 24, 2024. The academy currently provides training and development opportunities for more than 40 young cricketers, both boys and girls, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to advance in the sport.
Mr. Wallace has also been instrumental in providing young athletes with opportunities to gain valuable experience beyond Nevis. In 2024, he travelled with a group of young cricketers to Anguilla for a cricket tour, where the team produced an outstanding performance, winning every match played. More recently, he returned from another successful cricket tour in St. Maarten, further demonstrating his commitment to exposing young players to competitive cricket and creating opportunities for their continued development.
His contribution to the administration and advancement of cricket in Nevis is equally commendable. Mr Wallace served as an executive member of the Nevis Cricket Association for more than five years, contributing his experience and knowledge to the growth of the sport.
Through his many years as a player, coach, administrator, mentor, and community sports advocate, Mr Wallace has made a significant contribution to the development of football and cricket on Nevis. His unwavering commitment to nurturing young athletes and creating opportunities for the next generation has earned him the respect and appreciation of the sporting community.
For his outstanding contribution to sports and youth development, and his continued service to the people of Nevis, Mr. Wendel “Micey” Wallace is a deserving recipient of the St. James’ Parish Unsung Hero Award.
