Charlestown, Nevis
The sixth edition of the Christena Disaster Memorial Swim Camp officially commenced on Tuesday, July 29th, at Yachtsman’s Beach, continuing a growing tradition of promoting water safety and honouring the memory of those lost in the MV Christena tragedy.
Organised annually by the Swim to Win initiative and led by a team of experienced professional coaches, the camp aims to equip children with essential swimming techniques and build confidence in the water.
Chief Coordinator Ms. Terri Andrews reported that a total of forty-six young participants have registered for this year’s programme. The camp features two instructional sessions each day—one in the morning and one in the afternoon—providing participants with ample time to develop fundamental aquatic skills.
The camp is scheduled to conclude on Friday, August 1st, coinciding meaningfully with the 55th anniversary of the MV Christena Disaster, which occurred on August 1, 1970. This tragic maritime event remains one of the most significant national disasters in the history of St. Kitts and Nevis.
Ms. Andrews noted that the camp was originally initiated through the vision and support of Premier Mark Brantley and the Nevis Island Administration, reflecting a strong governmental commitment to youth development and maritime safety.
The Christena Disaster Memorial Swim Camp continues to serve not only as a platform for lifesaving education but also as a solemn tribute to the lives lost, fostering remembrance through resilience.
