Charlestown-Nevis- A brief but impressive ceremony, on Monday 17th June, signaled the start of the 2019 edition of the Summer Job Attachment program, hosted by the Youth and Sports Department.
The opening ceremony was held at the Red Cross building, located on Chapel Street and was ably chaired by Miss Kerese Elliot.
The opening prayer was done by Miss Nneka Martin and the national anthem was beautifully sung by several of the participants.
Youth Development officer, Vijay Harinarine, read a special message from Ag. Director of the Youth Department, Miss Kerdis Clarke, who was unavoidably absent.
In her message, she noted that the theme under consideration for the training course, is ‘your right to work right.’
She indicated that it was guided by human right number 23, as stipulated by the United Nations. The program will be geared towards helping the participants to develop proper work ethics.
She also gave an overview as to what the participants had to be part of.
It all started with a detailed registration process; the interview of prospective participants and then the professional development workshop.
Minister of Community Development, Hon. Eric Evelyn, was the key note speaker and he commended the Department of Youth and Sports, for continuing the wonderful initiative and then spoke from his heart to the participants.
He stressed such ideals as ‘a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay; dressing appropriately; right attitudes to work; honesty; staying away from social media while on the job; loyalty to the employer; respect for self, employers and co-workers.’
It was later stated that for this year, a scoring system will be implemented to assess the participants and will be utilized in determining the number of persons who will be eventually assigned jobs for the stipulated five week period.
There will also be a focus on VOLUNTEERISM and the subject matter utilized during the development workshop, will be tailored to suit the needs of the participants.
There are fifty persons attending the workshop, which will climax on Friday 21st June.
