CHARLESTOWN, Nevis  – The Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD), in collaboration with the St. George’s Parish Community Climate & Disaster Communications Ambassadors (CCDCA), continues to strengthen community resilience through public education and awareness activities across the island.

On Sunday, July 26, the outreach team visited Shiloh Baptist Church, where members of the congregation received important information on excessive heat awareness and personal safety.

The NDMD extends its sincere appreciation to Pastor Wayne Maynard and the congregation of Shiloh Baptist Church for their warm welcome and hospitality. The Department also expresses heartfelt thanks to the Mercy Corps Caribbean Resilience Initiative for its continued support of community-based climate resilience and disaster preparedness programmes.

The outreach activity was led by Mr Jack Ngumbah, Deputy Director of the Nevis Disaster Management Department. Representing the St. George’s Parish CCDCA, the ambassador team delivered an informative presentation on the dangers of excessive heat and practical measures residents can take to protect themselves. Following the service, the team distributed hazard-awareness brochures to members of the congregation.

The NDMD commends the St. George’s Parish Community Climate & Disaster Communications Ambassadors for their dedication to educating the public and promoting disaster preparedness. Special recognition is extended to:

As part of Excessive Heat Awareness Month, the Department is encouraging residents to take simple but effective precautions to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. These include:

Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
Protect yourself from the sun by limiting outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wearing lightweight clothing, seeking shade, and applying sunscreen.
Check on vulnerable individuals, particularly older adults, young children, and persons with chronic health conditions, to ensure they remain safe during periods of extreme heat.

Looking ahead, the NDMD is inviting the public to participate in Nevis Hurricane Awareness Drive Week, scheduled for August 16–22, 2026, under the theme “Preparedness Starts With YOU!” The week will feature a series of activities designed to promote hurricane preparedness and strengthen community resilience. Additional details will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Nevis Disaster Management Department remains committed to working alongside community partners to build a safer, more informed, and more resilient Nevis.
