The Curriculum Development Unit (CDU) hosted a series of workshops from Tuesday, September 1, to Wednesday, September 2, aimed at strengthening teachers’ knowledge, skills, and classroom practices. The sessions focused on analysing key components of the OECS Harmonised Primary Curriculum (OHPC) currently undergoing pilot implementation and enhancing educators’ capacity to effectively deliver the curriculum.
The workshops were carefully organised and tailored to address the specific needs of educators at different levels of the education system. The sessions focused on several key areas, including addressing issues emerging from the piloted curriculum, preparing teachers for the rollout of the Grade 3 Enhanced Mathematics Curriculum, introducing secondary school French teachers to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and strengthening environmental education through the PADF Eco-Youth Ventures initiative.
The review of the OECS Harmonised Kindergarten Curriculum** provided educators with an opportunity to reflect on their experiences during the piloting phase and examine key issues that had emerged. Through discussions and collaborative activities, teachers shared their experiences, identified challenges, and explored strategies to strengthen the implementation of the curriculum in their classrooms.
The Grade 3 Enhanced Mathematics Curriculum Rollout workshop sought to empower teachers by providing them with an opportunity to become familiar with the curriculum, explore effective instructional approaches, and build greater confidence in delivering mathematics content effectively.
Another series of workshops introduced secondary school Modern Languages (French) teachers to the CEFR, an internationally recognised framework that guides language teaching, learning, and assessment. The introduction is intended to strengthen teachers’ understanding of language proficiency levels and promote greater consistency in approaches to language instruction and assessment.
Teachers of Forms 3 and 4 Social Studies, Geography, and Integrated Science also participated in a PADF Eco-Youth Ventures-sponsored workshop aimed at strengthening environmental education and awareness. The workshop was conducted through a collaborative effort involving the **Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF), and the Ministry of Tourism of St. Kitts and Nevis.
The initiative sought to equip educators with knowledge and practical tools to incorporate environmental sustainability and eco-conscious practices into their classrooms, while encouraging students to develop a greater appreciation for environmental stewardship.
The workshops demonstrate the Curriculum Development Unit’s continued commitment to providing professional development opportunities that address the specific needs of educators while supporting the broader priorities and goals of the education system.
