Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis — September 10, 2026: The Ministry of Health is advising residents to take appropriate precautions as a significant plume of Saharan dust moves across the Federation.

The Ministry is particularly urging persons with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), allergies, and other respiratory conditions to exercise increased caution, as elevated levels of airborne dust and particulate matter can aggravate existing conditions and trigger respiratory symptoms.

According to the Meteorological Office, air quality is currently moderate but is expected to deteriorate as the dust plume intensifies through Friday evening. Reduced visibility is also anticipated. Conditions are expected to gradually improve from Sunday as the plume moves away from the Federation.

Exposure to elevated levels of Saharan dust may cause or worsen symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, runny nose, irritated or watery eyes, wheezing, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing.

The Ministry recommends that residents, particularly persons with respiratory conditions:
Limit prolonged outdoor exposure while dust levels remain elevated.
Wear a protective mask when outdoors to reduce inhalation of airborne particles.
Keep prescribed respiratory medications readily available and use them as directed.
Monitor symptoms closely and seek medical attention promptly if breathing difficulties or other severe symptoms develop.
Keep windows and doors closed where practical, particularly during periods when dust concentrations are heavier.

The Ministry is also encouraging members of the public to remain attentive to official updates and to take appropriate precautions as environmental conditions change.

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Meteorological Office, will continue to monitor the situation and provide additional information and guidance as necessary.

The public is encouraged to prioritize respiratory health during this period, particularly vulnerable persons, including children, older adults, and individuals with existing respiratory conditions.
