All Passengers Rescued After Apple Syder Ferry Incident Near Basseterre

Basseterre, St. Kitts – June 29, 2026 – All 47 passengers aboard the passenger ferry Apple Syder were safely rescued on Monday after the vessel reportedly began taking on water shortly after departing the Basseterre Ferry Terminal for Nevis.

According to eyewitness accounts from passengers aboard the ferry, the vessel had been underway for approximately five minutes when loud noises were heard. Moments later, passengers reportedly noticed water rapidly entering the vessel, triggering panic as people began screaming for help.

Passengers said life jackets were quickly distributed before those on board were instructed to abandon the vessel. Many were forced to jump into the water as the ferry continued to take on water.

Fortunately, the incident occurred close to shore, allowing for a swift rescue response. Fishing vessels in the area, the passenger ferry Makana, and members of the St. Kitts and Nevis Coast Guard responded promptly, rescuing passengers from the water and transporting them safely back to the pier.

Among those rescued was a visiting member of the United States Army, who, according to fellow passengers, used his military swimming training to assist in helping other passengers reach safety during the emergency.

Passengers reported arriving back at the pier soaked and barefoot, having lost personal belongings that remained aboard the ferry.

No fatalities or serious injuries have been reported.

Authorities are expected to launch an investigation to determine the cause of the incident. Further updates will be provided as official information becomes available.
