Basketball Major Refurbishment of Basketball City Nears Completion
Basseterre, Saint Kitts (SKNIS): The extensive refurbishment of Basketball City at Victoria Road is progressing well and is expected to be completed within the coming weeks.
The project has already delivered significant upgrades. Works completed to date include the full demolition of the previous court foundation and construction of a larger, modern foundation designed to meet international standards. An older structure on the western end of the facility was demolished, and a new drainage system was installed to better protect the court and surrounding infrastructure.
The seating support structure has been upgraded, and new bleachers are being installed. Obsolete lighting fixtures that previously obstructed spectators’ views have been removed, replaced with modern lighting designed to enhance both visibility and safety. Restrooms and dressing rooms have been renovated, and the cafeteria area has been expanded as part of the comprehensive overhaul.
Minister of Sport, the Honourable Samal Duggins, toured the facility on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, along with officials from the Ministry and Department of Sport and executives of the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Basketball Association (SKNABA). Public Works Engineer Jared Joseph provided an on-site briefing detailing the work undertaken to transform the venue into a safer, more comfortable environment for players, coaches, officials, and spectators.
Minister Duggins reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the development of basketball and youth empowerment.
“Basketball has long been a favourite sport among young people across our nation, and many have earned scholarships to universities overseas through the game,” Minister Duggins said. “We want to expand those opportunities. Having the right facilities is essential to helping our young people access scholarships and higher education. I have already been in discussions with several NBA players to host a basketball camp here in April to scout local talent.”
The Minister added that he was honoured to lead a major renovation of Basketball City after years of limited upgrades.
SKNABA President Glenville Jeffers commended Minister Duggins for his leadership and responsiveness.
“When we first engaged the Minister on upgrading Basketball City, he responded positively, and the Ministry of Sport has gone beyond our expectations in terms of what has been accomplished,” Jeffers said. “This facility has not seen renovation of this magnitude since it was built.”
Jeffers also noted the strong working relationship between SKNABA and the Ministry of Sport and affirmed that the investment in Basketball City is well-justified, even as plans for a new indoor basketball facility continue to be developed.
