GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – Ministers of Sustainable Development and senior officials from across the Caribbean are currently attending the 124th Special Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) on Environment and Sustainable Development.
In her opening address, CARICOM Secretary-General, Her Excellency Carla Barnett, stated that the meeting marks a critical step in the Community’s efforts to strengthen preparedness and engagement ahead of major global environmental discussions, including COP31 and CBD COP17.
Key priorities for the meeting include the development of the CARICOM Climate Finance Action Plan (2026–2030), advancing the CARICOM Ocean Policy to support a sustainable blue economy, operationalising the Technical and Scientific Cooperation Centre (TSCC), and strengthening regional coordination on climate change, oceans, and biodiversity.
It was noted that, as global challenges intensify, CARICOM continues to move from the periphery to the centre of global environmental governance, ensuring that the Region’s voice helps shape international solutions.
Also delivering remarks were the Honourable Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management; the Honourable Bharrat Jagdeo, Vice President of Guyana; and CARICOM Assistant Secretary-General Wendall Samuel.
