Basseterre, St. Kitts — September 30, 2026: The Department of Consumer Affairs is reminding supermarkets and other retail businesses across St. Kitts and Nevis of their responsibility to comply with the Federation’s consumer protection laws and regulations.
As part of its ongoing enforcement activities, Consumer Affairs Officers are issuing fixed penalty tickets to businesses found in violation of applicable consumer protection requirements. The enforcement measures are intended to promote compliance, protect consumers and ensure a fair and transparent marketplace.
We encourage supermarkets and retailers to familiarise themselves with the requirements of the Consumer Protection Act, 2023, and to ensure their operations remain compliant. Areas addressed under the legislation include price disclosure, sales records, promotions, consumer safety, misleading or deceptive practices, and other requirements designed to safeguard consumers.
Please remember that compliance is essential to maintaining consumer confidence and protecting the rights of persons purchasing goods and services. The Department has also emphasised the importance of proper pricing, visible expiration dates, appropriate product labelling and the provision of receipts containing relevant transaction information.
The Department of Consumer Affairs is encouraging all supermarket operators and retailers to know the rules, review their business practices and stay compliant.
Consumers are also encouraged to remain informed about their rights and responsibilities and to report concerns to the Department of Consumer Affairs where necessary. The Department provides consumer education, complaint resolution and enforcement services as part of its mandate to promote fair trade practices and protect consumer rights.
