Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 9, 2015 (SKNIS) Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, the Hon. Shawn Richards handed over six (6) laptop computers to “Operation Future”, to further enhance the developmental work being done with the nation’s youth
Deputy Prime Minister Richards, accompanied by Education Planner, Quinton Morton, made the presentation on Wednesday (April 8) at the St. Johnston Community Center where “Operation Future’s Creative Youth Academy“ is housed.
“The Ministry of Education is very pleased to donate six (6) laptops to Officer Lauston Percival and the project “Operation Future.”
After meeting with some of the children the Deputy Prime Minister said, “I understand that Operation Future makes regular visits to schools across the island, making presentations on Bullying, Gang Violence, Sexual Abuse and Drug Use. On behalf of the Ministry of Education, I extend gratitude to Officer Percival and Operation Future for their continual collaboration with the Education Department.”
The brief handing over ceremony was attended by children who participated in the program, administrators of “Operation Future” and members of the press.
According to Officer Percival, there are after school and Saturday programs which cater to all young people interested in participating in the organizations activities
These activities are designed to “educate the children about the dangers of youth crime, violence and drugs.” Another important objective is to promote the image of a police officer as a friend, protector and servant in the community, especially to the most vulnerable amongst us.
The program engages youths through games, sports, music and other endeavours designed to develop and strengthen important life skills.
Officer Percival spoke to special considerations given to students who suffer the consequences of early deviant behavior. “The program for expelled students offers a chance to continue with their academic achievements which is a good opportunity because instead of these young people staying home or going on the street, they will be able to keep up with their studies in a safe environment. These laptops will go a very long way and we (Operation Future) are very grateful.”
Operation Future is a program created in 2005 by officers of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force in partnership with concerned members and organizations in the community. The goal is to work closely with the youth, to provide guidance and mentorship and to assist them in avoiding disruptive behaviors and attitudes.
