WEDNESDAY JULY 02, 2014; ARNOS VALE, ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES – Both Saint Lucia and Grenada took full match points against opponents as the second round of matches in the 2014 Windward Islands Under-19 Cricket Tournament ended today Wednesday July 02, 2014 at the Arnos Vale Cricket Ground, and Anos Vale two Playing Field.
Grenada defeated hosts St. Vincent and the Grenadines by seven wickets at the Anos Vale Cricket Ground, after knocking off the 38 runs required for victory.
Batting first St. Vincent and the Grenadines had a miserable time with the bat, being dismissed for 109, with Romano Pierre scoring 27, and Hanson Latchman 19.
Bowling for the Grenadians, Deron Hippolyte took four for 22, Daryl Cyrus two for 25, Craig Philips 2 for 19, and Daniel McDonald 2 for six.
In their turn at the wicket, Grenada responded with 188 for eight declared, with Ryan John 30, and Deron Hippolyte 22 the leading scorers.
Kimali Williams grabbed two for 35, and Gideon pope two for 47 as the hosts were faced with the task of saving the match.
However batting a second time, St. Vincent and the Grenadines lost wickets regularly once Pope was out for 32; dismissed for 116. Zianni DaSilva and Shamron Hooper scored 27 and 21 respectively, but no batsman showed any desire to remain at the wicket and bat in the manner the situation demanded.
Daryl Cyrus was the chief destroyer with four for 49, Deron Hippolyte three for 29, and Daniel McDonald 3 for 07.
With 38 needed for victory, the Vincentians employed stalling tactics, but that did not stop the Grenadians march to victory, despite the loss of three wickets, and to the top of the points table with eighteen points.
Roland Cato scored 13, but Daniel McDonald and Kerville Charles remained 04 and 05 not out at the end. Gideon Pope took two for 20, and Obed McCoy one for 19 as the required runs was knocked off in 12.1 overs.
Over at the Anos Vale Two Playing Field, Saint Lucia remained in the hunt to retain their title with a ten-wicket defeat of Dominica.
On knocks of 38 by Josiah Hilton, 33 by Brian Joseph, and 21 not out by Dishon Joseph on Tuesday the first day of the match, Dominica totaled 138 all out in their first inning. Wickets fell at 14, 39, 52, 60, 62, 77, 109, 121, 134, and 138 all out. There were 09 extras made of three byes, four leg byes, and two no balls.
Dornan Edward took four 36, Valange St. Ange two for 48, Tonius Simon one for 03, Adeju Hobson one for 16, Kester Charlemagne one for 27, and Collinus Edward one for 01.
In reply Saint Lucia was 59 for three at the close but upon the resumption on Wednesday morning, the Saint Lucia stepped up to record the highest team total of the 2014 tournament – 261 all out.
Collinus Callender 58, Shadrack Descartes 47, Valange St. Ange 34, and Christian Charley 33 were the leading scorers. Extras totaled 10, made up of eight byes, one leg bye, and one wide.
The wickets were shared with Gilon Tyson taking three for 49, Kyle Cabey two for 33, Brian Joseph two for 54, Kharmal Hamilton two for 70, Alick Athanaze one for 25, and Dishon one for 31.
In their second turn at the wicket, Dominica was dismissed for 151. The main contributors were Dishon Joseph 41, Brian Joseph 22, Alick Athanaze 29, and Kharmal Hamilton 19 not out.
Selwyn Boyce finished with three for 40, Dornan Edward two for 45, Kester Charlemagne one for 10, Tonius Simon one for 17, and Valange St. Ange one for 25.
With the threat of rain looming overhead, the Saint Lucian pair of Christian Charley 18 not out and Valange St. Ange 09 not out, took only 3.2 overs to knock off the required 28 runs needed for victory; reaching 32 with loss at the end.
Gilon Tyson had none for 04, Brian Joseph none for 05, Kyle Cabey none for 06, and Kharmal Hamilton none for 12, with five extras bowled – four byes and one leg bye in the Saint Lucians’ ten-wicket victory to be second in the standings with 15 points.
On Thursday July 03 and Friday July 04, 2014, St. Vincent and the Grenadines on six points will face Saint Lucia at the Arnos Vale Cricket Ground, while at the Anos Vale Two Playing Field, Dominica on three points and Grenada will clash. (Robertson S. Henry/robertsons.henry@gmail.com)
