West Indies Women incurred a 32-run defeat to New Zealand Women in their first warmup match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, at the Western Province Cricket Club in Cape Town, South Africa on Monday.

Bowling first on a pitch that offered assistance to the bowlers, the West Indies has New Zealand on the backfoot early. Seam bowler Chinelle Henry who returned to competition after an injury lay-off was the first to strike when she had Bernadine Bezuidenhout caught by Hayley Matthews at first slip for three. Suzie Bates soldiered on for a 35-ball 30. But it was a 57-run partnership between Maddy Green (47 not out) and Brooke Halliday (24) which helped New Zealand to their total of 123-5 in their 20 overs.

Henry had the best bowling figures for the West Indies, finishing with 4-0-21-1 followed by Karishma Ramharack with 4-0-22-1.

In their reply, Hayley Matthews offered an initial charge as the West Indies looked solid in going after the target. But when she fell for 15 off 17 balls, the middle order stalled. Shemaine Campbelle and Henry then added 51 runs before Campbelle was bowled by Suzie Bates for a 29-ball 26, which included two fours. Henry followed soon after, trapped LBW by Amelia Kerr for 23 off 19 balls.

The remaining batters offered little resistance. At the end of the 20th over, the West Indies closed their innings on 91-7. Kerr was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers, finishing with figures of 4-0-20-3 followed by Hayley Jensen with 4-1-9-1.

The West Indies will play Sri Lanka in their final warm-up match on Wednesday at the same venue. The first ball is at 2:30 pm local time (8:30 am Eastern Caribbean/7:30 am Jamaica time).
