BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – Local farmer **Glenroy Stanley** has purchased 500 layer chicks from the Bayford’s Hatchery in St. Kitts, opting to source locally instead of importing chicks from Barbados as he had done in the past.

The first batch of layer chicks for 2026 was recently hatched successfully at Bayford’s Hatchery Management Centre. In a statement issued Tuesday, the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) noted that Stanley’s move signals the beginning of a new production cycle and demonstrates growing confidence in locally produced stock.
“Stanley’s purchase marks the start of a new production cycle. In the past, he relied on importing chicks from Barbados; this is his first time using locally produced, high-quality chicks, offering greater convenience and reliability,” the Embassy said.
The Embassy further reaffirmed its ongoing support for the local poultry sector.
“Moving forward, we will continue to provide a stable and certified supply of healthy chicks, helping farmers reduce dependence on imports and working together with local partners to promote a more resilient and sustainable egg-laying industry,” the statement added.
The Bayford’s Hatchery was established with technical and financial assistance from Taiwan and continues to operate in close collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture of St. Kitts and Nevis. The centre remains committed to the production of high-quality, healthy layer chicks to support local egg production and food security initiatives.
