Mr. Big Pepe—Large And In Charge

By: Curtis Morton

‘Are you no start me up you know-cause when me start up me can’t stop you know…..ah hag dey be!’ That was the excited voice of Allister Thompson, President of the Nevis Turf and Jockey Club but who also commentated the proceedings at the Indian Castle race track on Sunday 18th August.

The event was dubbed ‘The Culturama cool down meet’ and had been postponed from the previous week due to inclement weather.

On this day, the sun shone in all its glory and so did Thompson’s treasured horse, MR. BIG PEPE. It was the big race of the day, the 4th race to be exact and there was some talk that Mr. Big Pepe would be beaten on the sprint race.

His competitors stayed with him until the final hill but as they climbed that final incline, according to Thompson, his ’10 cylinder’ MR. BIG PEPE started to pull away from the other two and then it was that Thompson’s tone on the microphone changed. MR. BIG PEPE had secured another comfortable win.

Race number two probably would have ranked the second most exciting one of the afternoon as young Howell got off to a belated start on LADY PLEASURE but managed second place after a scintillating run
